I walked into my kitchen this morning
and found a gorgeous green gift
(left by my gardener)
When the flowers of Hydrangeas start to turn green,
or dark blue and pink with a papery feel
it is a sign that Autumn is in the air.
they will last like this without water until the next season comes around..
Leave blooms on the shrub until late summer. Toward the end of the summer the petals will begin to age and take on a vintage look. If left on the shrub a while longer, many blooms will pick up interesting shades of burgundy and pink, or in this case, green. The timing for cooler areas may be much different from this.
Hydrangea hortensis
One can cut the blooms, strip off the leaves, arrange them in a vase, with or without water, and leave them to dry. It is not necessary to hang hydrangeas up side down to dry unless the stems are very thin and weak.

I love it. I always save a huge bouquet from the Fall cutting and place them somewhere in my house to enjoy for the winter. I have a friend that uses floral spray to make hers a different color. The only ones that we can grow here are white and turn green...even with acid added to the soil it doesn't seem to help change the color. Have a great day- Diaa

So pretty, Col. Our climate and my garden is on the dry side, so I have to start over with potted hydrangeas each spring, but I'd love to have some dried like this. Very pretty in your home esp that last pic!

I try and I try and I have no luck drying them!! My mother is successful. She just gave me a bunch I and posted the photo on facebook. Yours are gorgeous!

What a nice treat and surprise from your gardener. I do the same thing with my hydrangeas at the end of the season but luckily ours is soon to begin. You have a wonderful kitchen from the looks of it!

How beautiful, Colette. Our spring season is soon to begin and our hydrangeas will bloom. I also dry mine at the end of fall but I don't think mine are quite as large and full and beautiful as yours. Gorgeous!
